Nissan Repair: Charcoal Canister,..fuel drips out of line, charcoal canister, purge valve

Question
The car is a 1998 200sx,I have a check engine light, checked code and it sent me to the charcoal canister. I took the line of the canister and fuel was dripping out of the canister and line, My wife likes to fill it to the top, so I am sure it overfilled into the canister. I drained as much fuel out as possible, cleared the code, the light came back on? I was going to replace the canister, I am curious if there is something else I may be missing or should replace also? Any advice will be great!!!

Answer
Josh,

Yes, it is not good to over fill the gas tank as the excess fuel goes to the canister and then overflows.  ON a 1998 the canister has a purge valve and the valve or the line going to it is contaminated with fuel.  The line is only supposed to allow vapor to go to the engine for s specified time.  I would take the charcoal canister off and turn it upside down and drain the fuel off.  Then, reconnect the lines and reset the code.  You might get lucky but you might end up replacing the valve.  That is the valve/sensor that is setting the code.
