Nissan Repair: Slight oil leak, engine gasket, crank case

Question
Von,

I have a small oil leak (maybe 5 drops a day) from my 92 Maxima. It seems to have gotten a little worse but it never has a noticeable affect on the oil level (however when i get a change and it is a 1/2 court too much it seems to leak a little more - also once tried synthetic mobil 1 and definitely more leakage) Any suggestions? Should i try locating/cleaning and silicone sealing or any additives that legitimately work? Heavier oil (uses 10W-30 in Fla) If i tae to repair afraid of the i need new engine gasket-$500 please.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Scott

Answer
Scott,

Yes, the synthetic will find a leak path of a seal is weak or a gasket is compromised.  I would use a conventional oil like Penzoil or your preference and the 10W30 or 5W30 is fine.  Leaks are difficult to diagnose without first pressure washing the engine and getting a clean piece of cardboard to place under the vehicle.  Then, locate the drip and follow it up.  On your year the valve covers are usual suspsect.  But, with the age it could be the front or rear seal.  If the car is only has a few drips a day it might not be worth the expense to correct. Yes, if the rear main seal is out you are pretty close on the price.  If things were really hard to find then you would use a dye or a smoke system.  Also, make sure not to overfill the crank case as it can cause the crank to hit the oil causing foam and that could lead to bearing failure since air bubbles in the oil will break down the oil film on the bearing surfaces.
