Nissan Repair: 2000 Maxima stalls when idiling, mass airflow sensor, air control valve

Question
I have a 2000 Maxima that starts fine  (90K miles), no SES light or other symptoms, and gas mileage is consistent.  But after full warm-up if I leave the car in park and idling for more than 45 seconds it start to idle rough and stalls out (same in neutral).  However, car does not do this if cold, or while in drive, or if the compressor is running for AC or defrost.  Seems to be somewhat temperature dependent, as the colder weather sets in time from park to stall out is getting less and less (currently about 50 deg. F)Any ideas on where to look first?  Car is starting to idle a bit rougher in drive these days, and I'd like to try to be proactive

Answer
Rich,

I would check the idle air control valve to make sure it is working properly.  That is, the throttle body and idle air control valve should be cleaned.  If you have not replaced the plugs they should be replaced.  I have a 2000 Maxima with 130,000 miles on it and I replace the plugs every 60,000.  And, cleaned the throttle body with carburetor cleaner.  Can't clean the throttle body when the car is running since it has a mass airflow sensor.  So, remove the throttle intake hose and spray down the plates with carburetor cleaner and wipre up the excess.  Then reconnect the hose and start the car.  It will hate you for the excess cleaner and take a bit to start.  But, once it starts rev the engine a bit to get it to burn off the excess.  Then, change the plugs to new ones.  Use NGK or Nippondenso and you should be fine.
