Nissan Repair: wont charge battery, defective alternator, 1989 nissan pulsar

Question
My girlfriends 1989 nissan pulsar wont hold a charge. She just bought a new battery, and supposidly replaced the alternater not to long ago. What could be the problem?

Answer
Rick,

There is a small wire between the alternator and the battery that has to be hooked up in order for the battery to charge.  Sometimes, when an alternator is replaced the wire gets damaged or not hooked up at all.  Another cause could be a defective alternator.  Rebuilds are really a hit and miss for quality since most rebuilders only replace what is needed and not everything.  I like Nissan alternators and their rebuilds too.  I would take the car to Autozone or Checker for a free electrical inspection to see if it is that wire or the alternator itself.
