Nissan Repair: 1993 infinity J30, air control valve, cold start

Question
QUESTION: The car will start fine and runs great for about a minute then it will stall. It will restart feathering the pedal but wont get over 3000 rpms until it warms up.At that time it seems like a switch has been flipped and it runs perfectly.I have checked the codes, none found.I also replaced fuel filter.Could you please help me figure this out. Thanks

ANSWER: Eric,

This sounds like the cold start system is not functioning.  That is, the temperaure sensor that tells the computer the car is cold is probably not working.  This sensor tells the computer that the car needs to be rich to operate and if it fails the car thinks it is at operating temperature and will run bad until warm.  courtesynissan.com can get you the part you need or your local dealer.  Ber sure to tell them you need the temperature sensor that the computer uses and not the one on the dash.

QUESTION: I checked the sensor and it had a 2.8 ohm reading on the 20K scale while cold and .7 when warm.Could it still be the temperature sensor? Thanks for your help.

Answer
Eric,

Sounds like the temperature sensor is fine.  Now, you need to check the itld air control valve to make sure it is working properly.  If the computer is getting the proper reading, which it is, then the next step in the process is to look at what the computer controls when the engine is cold.  The computer takes the cold start to mean that the fuel injector pulse width has to be lengthened to richen the mixture and the idle air control has to open to compensate.  If the fuel richens and the idle air control does not allow more air the car will be sluggish.  Also, have the plugs been changed?  Cold plugs will do the same thing if they are old.
