Nissan Repair: 1996 maxima, nissan maxima, haynes manual

Question
do the main timing cover have to be removed in order to replace the water pump on a 1996 nissan maxima?if so .can you please provide instructions on how to do it myself?

Answer
Ron,

Unless you are really mechanicaly inclined I would not attempt this.  The waterpump is accessed by removal of the small cover to the front of the timing cover.  But, before you do that you have to remove the other cover that is a little farther back.  This is where you relieve tension on the chain to get the pump to clear.  So, first, jack up the passenger side of the car and remove the passenger side wheel.  Then remove the inner wheel cover.  Now, the assessory drive belts come off.  Then remove the back cover off the timing cover and releive tension on the chain.  Then, remove the front cover on the timing cover and access the water pump and get the chain off the gear without moving the timing.  Clean everything up and replace it with the new pump.  Back to the back cover and reapply pressure on the timing chain.  Now, rotate the assembly two times to make sure the timing is still on zero mechanically.  Now, reinstall both covers and the belts and the inner fenderwell and the tire.  Now, change the oil and antifreeze and start the car and check for leaks and proper operation.  You will need a break after this kind of work...  nissantechinfo is the site where you can purchase and download the factory manuals in .pdf form or you can get a Haynes Manual at the local parts store.  But, I like the factory manual for this one...
