Nissan Repair: Spontaneous Combustion Glass?, nissan altima, spontaneous combustion

Question
Hi, I have a 98 Nissan Altima SE and over the weekend my rear window spontaneously shattered when I started the ignition. I have never heard of this before, and the guys at Safelite who replaced the glass hadn't either. I suspect some current from the heating wire surged or something to make it shatte (I can't think of anything else, there were no previous cracks and nothing hit it). Have you ever heard of this before? How can I make sure it doesn't happen again?

Answer
Grace,

The glass broke due to stress or a hard point sticking on it.  In my estimation, if there are no points where the glass is touching the metal part of the car it should not happen again.  Yes, I have heard of this in the past and seen where a manufacturing defect like not enough sealant was used or metal was not ground down smooth could cause the problem.  It should not happen again since a glass installer did the work and knows what they are doing.  I use Safelight exclusively.
