Nissan Repair: nissan Maxima 2001, neutral safety switch, nissan maxima

Question
I was a happy owner of Nissan Maxima until 120,000 miles. It is Maxima 2001 manual transmission. Engine light come on. After checking in AutoZone : P1706 - manufacture control transmission, is it important for manual transmission cars? Another problem which started recently was rough idling and car stalling even at traffic lights, after ~30-40 s. On your side I found information about changing idle control valve, so I replaced it, but the car has still the same problem. Also, I replaced clutch hose due to small leak.
After checking again in AutoZone : in addition to P1706 code, something about bank one fuel too rich information appeared. Any advice? Please. Angelika

Answer
Angelika,

First the P1706 problem is the neutral safety switch/clutch interlock.  Basically, the switch on the clutch pedal is probably gone bad and needs to be replaced.  This is the swtich that lets the computer know that the car is in neutral allowing the car to start.  The other problem with the bank one fuel being too rich means that you either have a bad oxygen seosor on that bank or that bank has a leaky injector or two.  I would replace the oxygen sensors first.  I would replace both front ones together since they are both probably coated and slow to respond.  Reset the codes after the replacement.
