Nissan Repair: 1988 Nissan Pulsar wont kick over, 1988 nissan pulsar, nissan pulsar

Question
Hi I have a 1988 Nissan Pulsar we just bought for my son and now it wont start. it doesn't fire just makes a high pitched noise like something spinning very fast. Is this the starter motor and if so where is it and how do I get it out. I have the Hayed manual but it doesn't show the location. (its an auto)

Answer
David,

If the high pitch noise occurs and the engine does not turn over means that you need a starter since the bendix is not making contact with the ring gear.  If the engine turns over and there is a high pitched noise that would be the timing belt.  Let me know what you find and we'll go from there.
