Nissan Repair: 1996 Nissan Sentra Speedometer, vehicle speed sensor, nissan sentra gxe

My speedometer in my 1996 Nissan Sentra GXE works off and on. Sometimes I can get it to work when I tap the dash. Any thoughts on what is causing this and how to fix it?

You will need to check, with a scan tool, to see if the computer is receiving the speed signal.  If it is then replace the speedometer.  If, when the speedometer stops and the signal to the computer stops then replace the vehicle speed sensor.  You can get a cheap scanner for under $100 bucks or you could get it scanned and Autozone and Checker will do it for free.
