Nissan Repair: 83 Nissan 280ZX Eng Int stops, nissan 280zx, fuel pump relay

Question
83 Nissan 280ZX - only while driving, the engine will int just stop as if there is no gas going to eng. My electrical dash show engine quit, but RPMs went to zero.  I try to downspeed to force the eng to turn, but engine will not start.  Pull over, turn off key for 5 seconds, turn key again and engine starts.  Frequency is around every 15-20 min.  The engine must be warm before this starts happening. To troubleshoot, I ran engine in driveway for 1 hour and had no problems.  I changed fuel filter, same issue.  Any other suggestions?

Answer
Dan,

SOunds like the distributor might be defective due to oil on the optics.  You are going to need to check the fuel pressure before you casn rely on my analysis.  If, when the car dies, you check the fuel pressure, and you have pressure it would be the distributor.  If there is no pressure and then it comes back after that two minutes you talk about then replace the fuel pump relay first.  If it does it again, then the fuel pump itself is defective.  Remember, on most cars it is either fuel or spark that cause the car to die.  Check these two things out and if you need more email me back.  I do miss my 1983 280ZX...
