Nissan Repair: 99 Maxima, receiver dryer, compressor oil

Question
Is it ok to change the A/C compressor without changing all the other a/c parts. I was told by it would put to much stress on the older parts and that it would not seal up and work correctly. Please let me know the facts about replacing the a/c compressor and parts. Thanks, Dan

Answer
Dan,

No, a compressor change is fine.  But, you need to replace the receiver dryer to protect the new compressor since, if the old compressor locked up it probably threw metal trash into the system and that collects in the dryer.  Then, you replace the compressor without replacing the dryer and the metal bits make their way back to the new compressor and destroy it.  Most compressor rebuilders will not warranty their compressor unless you have proof that you replaced the dryer.  But, the rest of the system should be fine.  Just a matter of replacing the compressor and dryer and then pump the system down and recharging it.  Make sure you have the correct amount of refrigerant oil in the compressor before you install it.  SOme come pre-filled and some do not.  So, check the instructions to see if it has oil in it.  If not, just purchase a quart of compressor oil for an R-134 system and use a measuring cup to get the correct number of ounces for your model.  You can use a measuring cup to get the correct amount of oil and pour it in where the hoses connect and then install it.  Also, get new o-rings to do the install and coat each with the compressor oil to help them seal.  Get a Haynes Airconditioning manual to get all the specifics on the oil and operating pressures.  All you will have to do is get the system evacuated before you charge it.  The amount of refrigerant is listed on a sticker under your hood.
