Answer
Andy,

I am assuming you are describing knocking as when the car is driven and you go over bumps?  If this is the case I would be checking the strut tower bearing as Nissan Maximas are known for this.  The bearing is the part of the strut tower where the strut sticks through, under the hood.  WHen the hood is open you see the bolt and nut sticking through.  On the bottom side of the strut tower is a bearing that allows the front end to rotate when you turn the steering wheel.  These are often missed since you usually only have to replace the struts and not the strut bearings.  I would check to see if these were replaced.  If not, they knock like crazy over bumps and most shops do not replace them since most cars never go bad.  I have a Maxima and I have replaced my strut bearings.
