Nissan Repair: Nissan Pathfinder 1988 Smog, fuel pressure regulator, spark plug wires


Question
Drove it Virginia to Texas, 1 quart of oil, no smoke
Fail Smog, Hydrocarbon High, Took to shop
Went to pick up, would barely run, black smoke  Took Home
Couldn't make it 3 miles home, converter glowed red
Shop had swapped 3 & 5 spark plug wires and ?? else

Swapped plug wires back, better but still no good.
Runs bad when gets to operating temperature
Had new oxygen sensor and complete new exhaust
Still has black smoke

Over all Pathfinder is in great shape, cold AC
good body, new tires etc.  Hate to give Up!

Sounds like you have a couple of defective injectors or a defective fuel pressure regulator.  I would get a gauge and check the pressure first.  If the pressure drops off instantly when you turn the key off would let you know you have leaky injectors.  If the fuel pressure is too high at idle, get a Haynes Manual for the specifications, then the fuel pressure regulator is defective.  The black smoke is the tell on the fuel system.  The over rich condition is what killed the converter so get this corrected or the over rich condition will kill the new converter.
