Nissan Repair: nissan xterra, mass airflow sensor, nissan xterra

Question
at what mileage would you suggest changing the timing belt on a 2000 Nissan Xterra?  i am looking (to buy) one with 104,000 miles and owner said it was never changed.  about how much does this cost?  also do you know of anything that has gone wrong with these cars/years that i should watch for when buying?
thank you

Answer
Sarah,

Change it as it should be done at 90K miles.  Somewhere around $350 for parts and labor.  If they change the water pump it will be more but worth it as that should be done at the same time.  Just check for engine codes as the knock sensor and the mass airflow sensor do fail on some.  If the check engine light is not on you should be fine with just the timing belt replacement.
