Nissan Repair: 1991 nissan pickup truck se v6, nissan pickup truck, neutral safety switch

Question
QUESTION: 1991 Nissan pickup truck se v6 automatic blows meter fuse ignition 2 under dash when truck is put into drive. truck does not start without fuse, i have to keep replacing the fuse and it only blows when put into drive all dash board lights go out and gauges such as rpm fuel do not work only speedometer works please help me thank you.

ANSWER: Jesse,

I would take the shifter a part and disconnect the shift interlock connector and see if that keeps the fuse from blowing.  It sounds to me that the solenoid interlock is shorted and overloading the circuit.  If this corrects the problem the solenoid should be replaced.  Please email me back and let me know and I will help further.

QUESTION: that does not fix the problem still blows the fuse only when the gear is put into drive reverse neutral gear 1 and 2 are fine only when in drive the fuse blows!

Answer
Jessie,

You found the problem.  I bet the neutral safety switch is defective.  Unplug it and see if the problem with the fuse continues to work.  You will have to start the truck first and then unplug the connector to the neutral safety switch.  Then shift and see how things work.  Pretty sure your neutral safety switch is on the transmission shift linkage at the transmission.
