Nissan Repair: Fuel Sending Unit, nissan altima, fuel sending unit

Question
QUESTION: I need to replace the Fuel Level Sending Unit on my 99 Nissan Altima GXE. I had understood that you could do this from the inside of the car, without having to take the tank out from underneath. How would I go about doing this?

ANSWER: Ricardo,

Remove the back seat and there should be a cover that you remove.  After you remove the cover you can see the top of the gas tank and you remove this to get to the sending unit and fuel pump.  It is an integrated assembly so if you just replace the sending unit you have to be careful not to damage the pump or the lines.  Do not get the O-ring wet with gas or it will swell and you will have to replace it.  Also, disconnect the battery before you start the process and have someone standing by with a fire extinguisher just in case.  No smoking and do not use a drop light in the area because if it falls and the bulb breaks you have an instant fire.  Just take precautions and be safe.  It is pretty much a plug and play operation if you take your time.

QUESTION: Is there anything I should be extra careful not to break? Also, is it easier to just change the fuel pump & sending unit at the same time, rather than just the sending unit?

Answer
Ricardo,

The o-ring is the pain cause if it gets wet it has to be replaced.  I would replace the entire assembly, fuel pump and all, as it is much easier and with the age you will be doing it soon anyway.  Just be careful with the connectors so the tabs do not break and you should be fine.
