Nissan Repair: Correct lube for pilot bushing and trans splines on 1986 Nissan Pickup, excess grease, temperature grease

Question
Hi Von,   Thanks very much for your previous answers to my questions concerning a clutch change on my 1986 2-wheel drive Nissan pickup.

I thought I was through asking you questions but here I go again---

I've gotten many various answers on what type of grease to lube the pilot bushing and transmission splines with, and I'm confused.  The old bushing was bronze, but the new one is steel.

What type of grease do you use to lube the pilot bushing and transmission splines with?  And how much lube should be put on the pilot bushing?

Thanks very much for your answer,

Sincerely,

John

Answer
John,

You use a high temperature grease and wipe all excess grease off.  It only takes some to lube the shaft and splines.  Then wipe it off completely, with a rag.  It only takes a little in the hole where the pilot bushing is in the end of the crank.  If you rub it in with your finger and then make sure no excess is going to spin out on the clutch plate.  Grease goes on the bushing and wipe the excess off.
