Nissan Repair: 96 pathfinder fuel pump?, fuel pump relay, intermittent problem

Question
after 96 pathfinder ran out of gas, it started missing and stopping when idling.  replaced the fuel filter, but that didn't help.  parts store suggested that i replace pump in gas tank.  basically, the car starts and idles for a while, but then dies.  it can run for 20 seconds or 5 minutes.  intermittent problem.  very frustrating.  could this be a short in the electrical control switch to the pump?  any suggestions would be appreciated.

Answer
Larry,

Sounds to me like a bad fuel pump relay or the fuel pump itself.  Remember that the pump is in the gas tank and if there is no gas it will overheat.  That could cause the relay to cook or the pump itself.  When it dies check the fuel pressure to confirm.  A relay is much cheaper than a fuel pump so if there is no pressure replace the relay first.  If you have pressure you are in business.  If not, look at the pump.
