Nissan Repair: 99 Nissan Quest thump when quick braking, planetary gear set, nissan quest

Bought a lemon used monster.
Short quick steps on the brake produce a chunking sound.
Also, I hear a humm in the transaxle at about 35 mph.

The brake noise could probably be eliminated by replacement of the pads along with the shim kit that Nissan sells for the car.  The pads are around $50 bucks and the shim kit is another $20 through rockauto.com.  The dealer is quite a bit more expensive.  The hum in the transmission is probably the planetary gear set bearings.  I would change the fluid and use a synthetic as an alternative to quite it down.  Otherwise, you are looking at taking it out to repair.  So, a fluid change is a possible fix to keep it going for a few more years.
