Nissan Repair: the best way to get my car repaired?, nissan sentra, nissan repair

Question
Hi!

I have a 1999 Nissan Sentra, has an SR20DE engine. I am a bit confused on what plan of action to take since I learned that something is wrong with my starter. One day I turned on the car and the ignition noise faltered a bit before turning on the engine completely. Because of the weak sound I thought it was a battery problem, but this guy from a chain repair service told me that it was my starter. He told me that it would cost $700 dollars to install a starter, which involves getting the parts shipped and installed in the car.

I couldn't leave the car at the repair place because I thought $700 was way too much. Also, I've recently moved to a new city where you have no choice but to drive..there are no buses. I told my co-workers and they balked at the price. Suggested to me that I buy a starter from an auto store and find a non-chain auto repair place. I am about to do this..but what are the risks of buying parts and letting the mechanic install? I don't understand the warranty issue. Also, when I go to different auto repair shops in order to get quotes on the starter repair, what type of questions should I ask? This will be my first (probably major) repair. Thanks

Answer
James,

Sounds like you and your friends at work are right on target with purchasing a starter and getting it installed somewhere good.  I would look for a Nissan repair shop since they know your vehicle.  Check with those co-workers and ask if they would recommend a shop.
