we had to take the hub off to change the bottom ball joint is there a specific way for it to go back on? as we put it back on and it was making a knocking noise

You will need a diagram to get the parts in correctly and there is a spring that keeps things unloaded when it is not applied.  So, get a Haynes Manual for the blow up diagram.  Or, if you only took one side down you could take the other side apart to see how things go back together.
