Nissan Repair: 2002 Nissan Quest Sliding Door Handles, nissan usa, nissan quest

Question
hello, investigating repair to broken door handles on sliding doors (both passenger and driver's side) for a 2002 Nissan Quest.  How difficult is it?  Other than buying replacement door handles, should I be concerned about any internal parts once we pop door panel off?  The handles are broken on both passenger and driver’s side sliding door – and can’t operate doors from inside.

I saw your response to a similar problem with a 2001 Quest on this forum and took your advice - checked out courtesyparts.com website, unfortunately their online catalog didn’t have parts for ’99 – ’02 model years.  I must say - very impressed with their online parts catalog for ’93 - ’97 Quests – excellent diagrams and parts breakdown, etc!

Did find a site that sells the door handles for ’02 Quest - along with the other parts for the door mechanism -> autopartspeople.com. handles are pretty inexpensive, but they didn’t have a diagram of parts for ’02 model, so wasn’t sure if I needed to be concerned about anything else.

repair is for a friend of ours who owns a 2002 Nissan Quest. ~2 weeks ago the handle on the passenger side sliding door broke off in her hand.  A week later the driver side sliding door handle broke and dangling - same thing.  Car has ~60,000 miles.  She bought an extended warranty through dealer, however, dealer says not covered under warranty – (said those items only covered up to 30,000 miles), and service tech blamed it on excessive force (she’s 5’4” – not built like the incredible hulk).  Dealer wants $900+tax to repair both handles.  Nissan USA warrenty people not much help either - gave her a case number but said that repair not covered.  So if I can get this repair done cheaper, will make her very happy so her kids don’t have to climb through the front doors/back hatch to get in and out of van.

this is chicago area - so gets cold in winter and she has had problems with sliding doors freezing (brought in to dealer to get checked out, has lubricated doors, WD-40, etc) - wondering if that's weakened things over time

Answer
Dan,

The door handle is a pretty easy replacement as long as you have the ten millimeter socket wrench and extension to get to the inside of the door.  You will need a panel removal tool to get to the clips that hold the panel on and a phillips screwdriver to get the cup handle and such off.  Then it is just a matter of pulling the plastic off and getting access.  The rods are held by clips and those that have broke should be part of the new handle.  The WD40 is not a problem with the mechanism so it is probably just that people have popped the door handles when they open them.  The spring load is to keep the handle tight and not a return feature.  But, most people just let go at full defelection and then the handle snaps back cracking it.  Over time it becomes brittle and snaps off inside.
