Hyundai Repair: speedometer, vehicle speed sensor, frequent problems

my 2002 santa fe speedometer will quit then bounce back up then quit work good the quit again of course it shut off the cruise

Hi, Hank.  The most frequent problems causing the speedometer to stop working are with the vehicle speed sensor and the plastic gear attached to it.

Although I suspect in your case the problem is with the gear, you may wish to consider replacing both the sensor and gear together.  To check, unbolt the sensor from the top of the differential portion of the transmission, and remove the sensor by twisting and pulling out the top.  Visually inspect the gear.  If the gear is worn, it's the most likely culprit.  If not, the sensor is the most likely culprit.
