Nissan Repair: Oil leak on a 1998 Nissan Maxima, timing chain cover, nissan maxima

Question
Von I have a 1998 nissan maxima and I notice a oil leak to the rear and front of the rear timing chain cover.  I was told that I can clean the area properly with gasoline then apply grey silicone to the area and the leak would stop. It didn't.  Can this job be done properly removing the both front and rear timing chain covers while the engine is in the vehicle or it have to come out. Thanks for your information on disarming the alarm on this vehicle.

Answer
Kingsley,

If the covers have to be removed you are in for a fun time.  Yes, it can be accomplished while in the vehicle but it is tight.  Be careful and clean all mating surfaces and use the correct grey silicone sealer.  Get the Haynes Manual for your car to aid in the assembly photographs.
