Hi, 1986 nissan 4x4 p u one dull head light checked light and it is good ,one more question in low gear it makes noise sounds like engine rod but it is comming from trans stops when i get into second gear could it be the throw out bearinr any ideas Thankyou

G Ritchie,

The headlight problem is the headlight switch.  If you checked the bulb and it is good and the connection is not corroded the headlight switch needs to be replaced.  The noise in first only would indicate the bearing for that gear and possbily the input shaft bearing is worn and needs replacement.  The bearings are not that expensive but the labor to take the transmission out and apart will cost.

Answer
G Ritchie,

You could use a two wheel drive trans but you would have to remove your transfer case and no longer have 4X4.  Also, you would need the driveshaft, crossmember and any other different components like shifter and such.  A wrecking yard has the interchange years for your truck and most within the same age a year older or newer should fit.  I would not do it as it is so much trouble.  Just remove the transmission and get the parts needed replaced and you will be money ahead.
