Nissan Repair: Alternator in 1995 nissan altima, negative battery cable, nissan altima

Question
How do i change an alternator in a 95 Nissan altima. It has 145,000 and is a good car except for this issue i haven't really had any problems.

Answer
Kimberly,

First, I would purchase a Haynes Manual since it has photographs and makes the process much easier.

The steps for replacing the alternator are as follows:  Disconnect the negative battery cable.  Loosen the pivot bolt on the altenator and the lock bolt.  Loosen the adjustment bolt (this is the long one that tightens the alternator) until it is loose enough to get the belt off.  Then remove the pivot bolt and the lock bolt and disconnect the wiring making note of how it goes on.  Then, compare to the replacement alternator to make sure it is the same size and pattern along with being clocked properly to get the wires back on.  There might be slight differences but it should go on the same as the one that came off.  Installation is reverse of removal.  Connect the wires to the alternator before putting it back on as it makes it much easier.
