Nissan Repair: 1987 Nissan Pathfinder, speedometer cable, crank sensor

Question
I recently purchased it from an auction, the radiator was blown. I've replaced all the heating cooling system, checked all vac lines, the secondary air filter was soaked with water. Everything seems to be ok now still runs a bit rough. when I drive on the freeway if its real cold as it is lately I can go to about 60 mph, when I go over that the engine cuts off until the speed drops to 55 then power returns, when its a little warmer I can only get to 45 mph. their had been a coolant leak next to the carb, the plug wires had a lot of green built up on the connections. was thinking maybe the crank sensor needed to be cleaned, but the speed thing..... the vehicle had a speedocable so not sure where to look for the speed sensor.

6 cyl 4 wheel drive, Eng cuts out at 45 mph sometimes 65 mph, if I disconnect the spedo cable I can keep up with anyone on the freeway. I've replaced eng temp sensor, air filters and fuel filter.

Curtis,

So, you are saying that if the speedometer is disconnected the engine runs fine.  Does it throw the check engine light when the cable is unplugged?  I would think the distributor has oil on the optical pickup just from the year and my experience with them.  But, if you say the speedometer cable lets the truck run fine when disconnected I would think the speed sensor is defective and needs to be replaced.  Email me back and let me know more about your speedometer thing...

Answer
Curtis,

I would check all the connectors to make sure that they are clean.  Also, do a compression check to make sure you do not have a dead cylinder.  The speedometer head unit is where the computer picks up the speed of the engine so you might even have a defective speedometer.  You could remove the cluster and clean the connector and cable connection with a number 2 pencil eraser.
