BMW Repair: Clack, rear differentials, wheel bearings

Question
Question
I have a 2001 325i with a little over 89K on it. I notice a "clack, clack" noise that seems to be coming from the rear end of the car.You can even feel it on the back seat. It is noticeable on low speeds but even more when turning to the left... the "clack, clack" changes rate with the speed of the car... much less when driving faster. I've yet to take it in to the dealer... was hoping if you would give me any thoughts before taking it in? Thank you.

Answer
Espiri, Faulty wheel bearings are not uncommon. It sounds as though maybe your right rear wheel bearing is at fault because you hear it more while loading the right side on a left hand turn. Rear differentials are not very common but I wouldn't rule it out. The flexible drive disk or the center driveshaft bearing can make noise, but they usually cause vibration not so much noise. Wheel bearing should be no more than half a day's labor. Same with the Drive disk and driveshaft. The rear differental may be more like five or six hours.
