Nissan Repair: 1993 infiniti j30t, power drains, infiniti j30t

Question
Hi , In August I purchased a 93 infiniti j30t for my 17 year old daughter to drive. It was running fine, until we had some heavy rain and much to our dismay the sun roof leaked. we garaged the car as soon as we found out and let the car dry out but soon developed a problem. The car would not start everytime or would die when coming to a stop sign, and eventually would not start at all. I had it towed to my mechanic. He found that some water had gotten into the computer and shorted out the relay that tells the car to start (or something to that effect). In order to save the expense of a new computer the mechanic installed a separate relay and  by-passed the computer relay. The car starts and runs fine but the battery goes dead every couple of days. We had a new battery installed and I had the same mechanic look at it, however he could not find any drain on the battery or any apparent fault with the alternator. This has been going on for close to a month now. My instincts tell me its the computer, and I don't want to keep throwing good money after bad, is there something else I should be looking at? I've heard of bad door sensors causing power drains. Is there something in the computer that could be intermittently be telling the car that the battery is dead? Do you know of anyplace to get a refurbished computer at a reasonable price?

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Jerry

Answer
Jerry,

Yes, the computer probably needs to be looked at for drain of electrical.  I would remove the relay and put it back to factory.  If you have a volt / ohm meter you can check the system to find the drain.  I would think the fuel pump or the like is staying on since the computer is partially defective due to water.  It is an awesome car and I would do what it takes to get it right.  You can check systems yourself using a meter as described.  With the car off just check a system at a time until you find the drain.
