Nissan Repair: Disarm Air Bag and Security Indicator light, controller area network, nissan sentra

Question
Purchased a used 2008 Nissan Sentra 2.0 and I would like to diarm the air bag. My wife is short and close to the steering wheel. If I remove the fuse (10 Amp), located behind the sunglass holder, will this do the trick? Or is there something else that has to be done? Also this security indictor light has been blinking. Called the dealership and they said this just stays on. No harm to the vehicle. Is this true? Because when we where looking to by I do not recall this light flashing. It does go out if the car is running.

Thanks for any info to these two questions.

Answer
Stan,

The airbag circuit is still active without the fuse.  I know it sounds strange, but there are batteries that backup the system.  The only way to really disable the airbag is with a cut-off switch.  Nissan sells them.  But, you have to get an nhtsa.gov letter signed to have anyone install the cut-off switch.  There are liability concerns and most shops will not disable the airbag.  Remember that the airbag is a safety device.  Also, if you attempt to disassemble the airbag and it goes off it is not going to be good as it could injure or kill you.  Another thing is the airbag on the other side is not going to work if you do not have a cut-off switch installed since the controller area network will note a problem and disable the system.  On the liability issue, you could get in trouble with your insurance company if something happens to the wife or anyone riding in the vehicle due to the airbag not going off.  They could even deny coverage...
