Nissan Repair: 86 nissan z24, combustion chamber, compression check

i have a 86 nissan z24 when i set the timing acording to the book #2 slot on silver link and #2 hole the #3 valve is opening is this right? or is my timing off also i have low compression min. is 128 and i'm pulling 96 is my rings gone orcould it be my timing? any info would help thanks

Check the static timing by running the engine up to top dead center and remove the upper cover and check to see if mechanical timing is off.  If it is correct you can check the compression with a gauge.  Then do the compression check again after you pour a teaspoon of 30 weight oil in the combustion chamber.  If the compression goes up you know it is the rings.
