Nissan Repair: sentra 1992 front axles, oil seals, alignment tool

Question
I have a broken left driver side front axle on my sentra 1992.  Based on the repair manuals i need to remove the right to remove the left one.  Is this so. Also oil seals do they absolutely need to be replaced. Te manual also refers to a special holding tool for the gear in transaxle so it stays in place any idea in what that is.  Is it the alignment tool that is used upon install not to damage oil seal.

Answer
Lou,

No, you should not have to remove one side to get to the other.  And, you should have no problem removing the axle with just a long screwdriver to pry it loose from the case.  Now, you are going to have fun removing axle from the spindle.  The book best describes the process.  But, for starters remove the wheel, the center nut and then the two bolts that hold the spindle to the strut along with the tie rod end and then you should be there.  Then drive the axle out and install the new one.  If you keep it centered I have had no problem with the seal on the transmission case.
