Nissan Repair: 1995 Nissan p/u water pump replacement, wheel drive cars, front wheel drive cars

Question
Can you please tell me what might make the replacement of a water pump on a 1995 Nissan pickup with the 2.4 engine take longer than other water pump replacement jobs. Local repair shops are consistantly giving book replacement times of 3.5 hours to 4.2 hours. All have said typical replacement times for most water pumps are in the 2.0 to 2.5 hour time range. Some thought the pump may be turned with the timing belt, creating additional time, but all researched and said no, that is not the case. I looked, and the job looks pretty straight forward, other than possible removal of the radiator for additonal removal clearance purposes. Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jerry

Answer
Hi Jerry,

Some front wheel drive cars use the timing belt to turn the water pump, but no trucks to my knowledge. The official time givimg by Nissan for that truck is 3.1 hours. This does not include diagnostic time nor road test and leak checking. Which becomes vague depending on the repair facility. I would charge about 3.7 all said and done.
