Towing Issues: what option do I have?, tow yard, storage fee

Question
Hi,
My name is Abirama Effendi. I live in Santa Clara, California right now.
I had a small red sedan before, until my car got towed when it was driven by my friend. It has been 2 weeks since it was towed.
I'm thinking about to abandon the car, for the towing fee already exceed the car's price when I bought it. However, I haven't changed the name of the car's owner to my name.
My question is:
1. Will it be alright to abandon it? and will it be a problem to the registered owner if I do that, like he needs to pay some money, etc?
2.If I can't abandon it, what option do I have beside to pay the towing fee?

Thanks a lot for your help. Your answer will really help me a lot.

Answer
Abandon the vehicle a the tow yard, well that is not good or advisable. California has laws which state the last registered owner of the vehicle is responsible for towing and storage fees.

Now if you were correct and its not registered in your name, I really hope that you are really good friends with the previous owner and that he will understand when the collection agency starts to call and does its collection practices.

Now if you have the title and it is signed off then you can talk to the tow company and offer the title to them in place of the towing fee, but most likely they will want the title and also some money...

But it really does matter what the tow company wants to do.

But act quick as the storage fee increases daily.
