Nissan Repair: Check Engine Light 1997 Nissan XE, fluid maintenance, autozone

1997 5 Speed Manual 2 WD Pickup with 39000 miles.  I travel alot so it didn't see alot of action yet it was in the garage in Illinois where I used to live.  Engine in top condition I keep fluid maintenance at a superior level.  I started her up the other morning after a rain. She was sitting outside.  I am in TX now outside of Fort Worth.  I put her in reverse and I do not know if a misfire occurred or the clutch slipped. She lerched a little but the infamous CHECK engine light came on.  I pulled all of the plugs great cond.  After she warmed up she rean like a dream.  How do I terminate the CHECK engine light without going to a shop to have someone hook it up?  One other question How do I adjust the clutch play?  Thanks

You can go to Autozone or Checker and get them to turn the light off for free.  You can disconnect the battery for five minutes and that should do the trick too.  Lastly, Harbor Freight and purchase a code reader for $65 and then you can read codes and clear them too.
