Nissan Repair: 91 stanza, cat converter, alternator output

Question
the car ran with no power no matter how much throttle. the exhaust manifold got cherry red.next day i tried to start it to pull it into garage to check out. the car would not start i pulled off cat.converter checked it did not look clogged the car still won't start with exhaust still open. changed the plugs car cranks normal, has spark, and smells like it's getting fuel got anything else i can try? thank you for any help you might give.

Answer
Jim,

If the exhaust is not blocked and the exhaust is running cherry red I would say the car is running lean and that could be caused by a bad fuel pump, regulator or a defective alternator.  Check the pump and pressure first and if these are fine check the alternator output.  If the car does not have enough amps the injectors will starve the engine regardless of fuel pressure.
