Nissan Repair: Nissan Serena 95 diesel 4 wheel drive auto-transmission, nissan serena 95, torque convertor

Question
Hi
I just replaced auto gearbox and torque convertor with a second hand one. On starting the engine, there is metal grinding noice coming from the bell housing area - sometimes stops when you rev the engine. Gears change quite smoothly and noice disapear at high speed buts starts again when I press the break pad. What could it be? what should I do

Answer
Alex,

The flex plate or the spacer plate are probably rubbing from being slightly bent upon install.  You probably will have to take the bellhousing loose from the transmission to get enough room, slide them a part, and look for what is touching.  I have seen the engine plate with a slight bend cause the noise and I have seen where one of the torque converter bolts was loose and touching.  Hard to say without looking at it.  But, that would be my estimation.  I have even seen where a bit of metal was stuck in the bellhousing and that was causing the noise.  Never knew where it came from either but it was in there none the less.  Email me back with what you find.
