Nissan Repair: 94 Nissan Altima Car Antenna, nissan altima, car antenna

Question
How do you replace the trunk mounted factory power antenna with a fixed mast aftermarket antenna? The after market antenna has a aftermarket radio connector plug. However, being that the antenna is in the trunk, how would I route that connector to the back of the stereo in the dash. Is there a connector in the trunk I could just plug it into there? Also if there isn't a normal connector in the trunk is there a converting wire to adapt the connector so I would not need to route it to the dash?

Answer
Hi Lotus,

It would be best to spend the extra money and get the factory replacement. But you still can use the aftermarket one without having to rewire. You will need a test light to determine which wire in the factory plug does what. Sometimes there are two wires and sometimes there are three. The after market one may only have two. One is gound, one is power. The aftermarket one will come with a pig tail and you splice it into the the factory wires. There should be a diagram or booklet with the A/M one that tells you which is which. You may need someone to turn the radio on to get power to the "hot" wire of the antenna so you can see it on the test light. They will need to turn it off and on until you get the light on, on the test light. Once you determined which is hot, which is ground, cut the plug off the factory wires and strip the insulation back. Twist the wires together with the wires from the pigtail and wrap with electricians tape. Finish your install of the hardware and enjoy your new antenna. Or you can bring it over to my house with a 12 pack and we'll have it done in ten minutes! LOL
