Question -
my gauges on my 98 nissan frontier have messed up completely.... odometer reads 9's across it, tachometer wobbles between 0 and 1, fuel and temp gauges top out... every now and then it workd but rarely.... this resistor behind the instrumen panel, what exactly is it and how much does it usually run?

Answer -
Matt,

This could be the resistor or the connection on the instruments.  Take the cluster out and clean the contacts where the harness connects first.  Use an eraser and some tuner cleaner from Radio Shack.  The resistor is about $20 bucks if it is defective.  Or, go to a wrecking yard and source one there.

how hard is it to get to the gauges?

Answer
Matt,

You just need to take the screws out of the trim and then remove it and then there are four screws that come out to get the cluster out.  I would get one from a wrecking yard if cleaning the contacts did not work as this is the cheapest option.
