Nissan Repair: Nissan Transmission Headache, nissan transmission, shift cable

Question
I have a 1993 Maxima.  Excellant Vehicle until recently.  While driving, the whole vehicle went into a hard shudder.  I did not feel or hear any other sounds and continued on my trip.  I parked the car and did not touch it for five days.  When I tried to return home I found the car had no reverse gear and I could go forward in P-R-N-D-1-2.  The oil looked good.  Should I check codes first or go for the rebuild?
Thanks for the help.

Answer
Vickie,

If the car has no reverse it is going to have to go into the shop to have the transmission looked at.  Now, if it goes forward in any gear that could mean that the shifter is broken off and stuck in drive and all you are doing is moving the shifter and the shift cable is not moving the shift quadrant on the transmission.  So, first, open the hood, with the engine off, shift through the gears and have someone look at the shift quadrant on the transmission and see if it moves.  If it does not replace the shift cable.  If it does take the car in and get the transmission gone through.
