Nissan Repair: 1995 maxima hard to start w/ cel codes, coolant temperature sensor, alternator output

Question
I checked the CEL code last night and the code 05/05 came up which means "no problems". I don't understand why an error code like that would come up. I noticed after yesterdays poor start that the engine smelled as if it was flooded.

2 years ago I had a whiny alternator and was told I should replace it.  The noise stopped so I did nothing. Could a dying alternator cause poor starts with no other symptoms?

Question -
I have a 95 maxima gxe w/100,000 miles that is intermittently hard to start, mostly on cold starts. I replaced the starter with no change. Last week the check engine light came on. I checked the codes using the flashing light method. Two codes were listed. 1. knock sensor and 2. enigine coolant temperature sensor. I reset the cel light, but it came back on after a day or so.

Where should I start? (no pun intended) I have heard that a bad coolant temp. sensor would cause a poor start, but that doesn't make sense. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Ed,

Replace the knock sensor, when check your alternater output with lights and a/c on. If it drops below 12 volts, there is your problem.

Answer
Ed,

I still need to know your alternator output. This will likely be the problem, especialy after you mentioned the noise the disappeared. The self diagnosis is not going to see an under performing alternator. There are many reasons why, but I would replace it regardless.
