Nissan Repair: Nissan 100NX electrics, nissan 100nx, fuse panel

Question
Hi there,
I'm in the UK and drive a 1996 1.6i Nissan 100NX Pacific. Yesterday I started my car (which happend fine) only to find that all the electrics - clock, windows, lights etc were'nt working. After checking under the bonnet and returning to my car it seemed okay again. Then today when I stared her up, I experienced an electrical power surge. Wipers were going double speed, battery check light was ultra bright and after switching the engine off and on again it seemed fine once more. Finally, whilst in traffic I switched my window down and the surge reappeared. I'm at a loss as to what it could be. My altenator went 4 months ago and I replaced with a second hand one that seems to be working fine so could it be that? Any help would be gratefully received!
Many thanks in advance,
Wilson

Answer
Wilson,

I would check the alternator for output since that seems to be a common factor and it is internally regulated.  So, if it puts out over 14.2 volts you need to look at replacement of the internal regulator.  You could just get another second hand alternator as an option.  The thing where the clock, windows, lights and such not working could be the ignition key not returning to the full run mode.  This would cause the contacts not to power the items you mention.  Also, it could be the master fuse panel by the positive battery post.  Several fuse links there along with some master fuses.  Check allt he connections as to their condition to ensure that nothing is loose or corroded.
