Nissan Repair: Car wont start, neutral safety switch, nissan sentra

Question
Have a 1996 Nissan Sentra.  Thought the battery needed replaced as it wouldnt start. (still had original battery) Replaced battery but still wont start.  The lights and accessories do work though.I assume the alternator is still good. What else could be the problem?

Answer
Sara,

The neutral safety switch is probably gone.  Try shifting from park to neutral and turn the key to start while doing this and it should start.  Be sure to have the other foot on the brake to keep from moving if it starts in gear.  If a manual car the clutch pedal has the safety switch on it.  If you pump the clutch while turning the key it should start too.  Problem with either is that the contacts wear out.  Simply replace the switch and you should be fine.  If not email me back and let me know.
