Nissan Repair: infinity odometer, infinity j30, plastic gears

My 97 infinity J30's odometer just stopped. spedometer works ok. How can I trouble shoot weather it's the sensor or the unit itself?

You will not like this but the odometer gear has broken inside the cluster.  You could get one from a wrecing yard and switch out the part or purchase a new head unit from the dealer.  That is, the speedometer that is in the cluster or you could send it out to a specialty shop.  I have done many of these as the plastic gears get old and crack.  If you do it yourself wear cotton gloves as not to get fingerprints all over the inside of the cluster.  Also, you have to put the miles to what they are to be legal.  So, you cannot run it back to zero legally.  Now, if you already have over 100K miles and the title reflects mileage exceeds mechanical limits there is really no problem in what it would read.
