Nissan Repair: P0304 - MAF Sensor, mass air flow sensor, mass air flow

Question
Dear Mr. Von Sudderth,

This is a continuation of my P0304 question. I replaced the coil/distributor and there was no change in the performance of the vehicle, 2000 Nissan Altima 2.4L DOHC. I started to disconnect sensor to see if there was any change in performance. When I disconnected the Mass Air Flow sensor, the engine responded and ran real smooth. Can a bad MAF sensor cause the engine to run rough and give me a P0304 code and not a code for the MAF sensor?
Thanx,
Myron

Answer
Myron,

Yes, the mass airflow sensor can set this code and that can cause the problem  It is not normal that this sets the does but it has happened.  A year ago I did a Altima that had this happen on and it was the MAF.  Now, be sure to check the intake hose for cracks or that the clamps are loose because that can cause it too.  Any unmetered air can cause the problem.  Get a Haynes manual and do an electrical check on the MAF before replacement.
