Nissan Repair: 1997 Altima stalls & Idle varies, throttle position sensor, air control valve

Question
My Altima has 170K miles and is a 5 speed. The idle varies from 500 to 1100 RPM intermittently. It stalls intermittently when I come to a stop. It makes no difference if it is full of gas or low nor whether the A/C is on or off. Once in a great while it will buck in power as I drive down the road. Most of the time it drives O.K. Could this be a Postion sensor on the Distributor? Any ideas would be appreciated!

Answer
Barry,

A couple of things here.  First, the distributor is probably bad.  Second, I would clean the throttle body and check the throttle position sensor.  I think the idle air control valve is dirty along with the throttle body so I would clean them first and that should correct the idle thing.  The distributor should correct the bucking problem.  Now, make sure you have a fresh tuneup like plugs, wires, cap and fuel filter along with a new PCV.
