Nissan Repair: 1993 Nissan Terrano Automatic Transmission, nissan terrano, shift lever

Question
Hi Von,

I have a quick question regarding my automatic transmission. Currently, it will not shift past first gear, and sometimes not even into that.

When the vehicle is started, it will shift into first but if the RPM moves above around 3000, will shift into neutral, although shift lever is still in "D".

While moving along, if the car stops for any reason (traffic light etc) the transmission slips into neutral and will not move into first, even though the shift lever is still in "D".

Moving the lever into Park then back into Drive has no effect, the vehicle must be turned off then on to allow it to move again (!?!?!?).

Shifting it into reverse seems to free up the box a bit, with a higher RPM capable to be reached in first gear before it moves into neutral.

Help! Is this just a gummed up transmission or something more expensive?

Thanks very much,

Russ

Answer
Russ,

Change the filter and fluid first.  Now, if it still does it I think the pump is going out.  If there is insufficient line pressure the transmission will do what you describe.  A gummed up filter and old fluid will do this too.  So, that is why you change the filter and fluid first.
