Nissan Repair: 87 Nissan Stanza, fuel pressure regulator, nissan stanza

Question
i have a stanza with a hard start, rough no idle, and sometimes no start,2.0L i have checked fuel pressure and it runs 45 to 50 so thats ok, some times it runs poorly but not often it has been to a couple of shops but none with foreign experts as there aren't many around here some one has fooled with the tp sensor so i would like to know how to reset that, also it ran the same or lack of running before the sensor was adjusted. i have to feather the throttle to obtain rpm seems to run ok at 2,000 to 5,000 rpms but falls on its face to idle and often won't start, thank you in advance for any help this is my only way to work, and i'm tired of walking, thank you very much    Mike

Answer
Mike,

I would check the intake hose for cracks as that will cause the problem you describe.  Also, make sure there are no loose clamps as unmetered air will cause the car to have hard start problems.  If the pressure is that high you could have a blown fuel pressure regulator or a plugged up filter.  Replace the filter.  Check the fuel pressure by disconnecting the vacuum line to the regulator and the pressure should jump up about 12 psi.  If it stays the same then replace the regulator.  The car is getting flooded when you start it and it runs good at higher rpms.  That is my thought since the pressure is so high.  Get a Haynes manual and they will list the pressure for your car with and without the vacuum line connected to the pressure regulator.  I bet your plugs are black from too much gas.
