Nissan Repair: 1993 Altima GXE - Neutral Safety Switch, neutral safety switch, nissan dealer

Question
Hi, and thanks in advance for your opinion.

I was driving at highway speed (105 kph) yesterday when the engine on my 1993 Altima (5 speed manual, 232,000 km) suddenly started to rev uncontrollably, and I started to accelerate.  The brakes slowed the acceleration but did not really help much.  If I depressed the clutch the engine RPM shot to 7500-8000.  I killed the engine via the ignition and was able to coast through traffic and pull over on the side of the road.  I had the vehicle towed to the local Nissan dealer who was able to determine that the "breather hose was out of position because air box had been replaced recently and the hose was left dangling close to the throttle cable".

My question is this ... a few days previously I had my Neutral Safety Switch replaced.  Would this work (done by a non-Nissan mechanic) have involved working on the breather hose and/or air box?  If not, what sort of work requires access to the air box and/or breather hose?

Thanks again!

Answer
T Morley,

Yes, the hose could have been dislodged by the work performed.  If the switch was replaced the box had to be removed to access the switch.  It just took a few days to fall off.  With the age of the car the hoses get hard and are not as tight as they used to be.  I do not think the mechanic thought it was going to be a problem or he would have told you to replace the hose.
